Money, Money, Money (and the lack thereof)

New Victoria Publishers: Tracing a Lineage
My interest in New Victoria Publishers began simply as an interest in independent feminist publishing–particularly their early years as print shop for feminist and counterculture materials. As I did a little more research into New Victoria, however, new questions began to emerge.
Some notes on the New Victoria Publishers Records Collection
Eras of New Victoria:
[original namesake Victoria Press 1860, Emily Faithfull]
Beth Dingman, Nina Swaim, Katie Cahill, and Shelby Grantham were fired from the Elm Tree Press, a Vermont print shop, after requesting raises to their salaries of three dollars per hour to match male counterparts at other press shops
Beth Hapgood Papers, 1789-2005 (bulk 1967-2005)
Extending from my interest in intersections of gender, spirituality, and perceptions of the occult, The Hapgood Papers are interesting as an example of records relating to a woman’s experience and interests within (and alongside?) a male-dominated counterculture. I’m curious to see not only the content of this collection and what it might reveal about the spiritualist communities of the period, but also how Hapgood has amassed this collection, what is included and what information can be gleaned from the assemblage of the collection itself.

Amelia Earhart’s Underground Flying Society Records, 1986-2000
In some ways my interest in the Amelia Earhart’s Underground Flying Society Records is an extension of my interest in New Victoria; focusing not just on a press, but a specific publication (Amelia’s Newsletter), as[…]
New Victoria Publishers Records, 1974-2009
The New Victoria Publishers Records seems to be absolutely loaded with a wide variety of content. As someone interested in alternative and counterculture press, this looks like a treasure trove. In work I’ve done looking[…]
Broadside Press Collection, 1965-1984
One of the first collections to catch my eye was the Broadside Press Collection. I’m familiar with a few Broadside poetry publications, and I’m especially interested in looking at alternative press and other counter-culture printed[…]
